The Kuumba Singers of Harvard College is a student-run organization at Harvard University. Welcome to our website! We hope you will use it as a resource to stay informed of our undertakings. As we enter our 38th year as both an organization and a family, we continue to keep the mission alive – to celebrate black creativity and spirituality. Whether as a member, alumni, parent, friend, or fan, we hope that you will come celebrate with us. There are endless opportunities to experience the joyous atmosphere of the Kuumba Singers. Every year we hold a series of events – the Dr. S. Allen Counter Christmas Concerts, the Dean Archie C. Epps Spring Concert, the Dr. Walter J. Leonard Black Arts Festival, the Body & Soul show of Harvard-Yale weekend, and our annual Kuumba tour, among many others. Through these endeavors, we impart the rich lessons of community and struggle with audiences of great diversity. Thinking about the year ahead, a quote from a reading done at a recent Spring Concert comes to mind: "Our ancestors have always carried burdens like boulders, raised children in the strange light of crosses burning in their yards. The struggle staggers us...This is more than fighting to exist. There is a journey from the me to you. There is a journey from the you to me. A union of the two strange worlds must be." It is our enduring faith in history, our profound understanding of those who came before us, and our willingness to celebrate with one another the tradition of black creative expression, that sustains the passion and dedication exuded by our forebears – those two undergraduates who gave birth to this revolutionary space. Kuumba connects us all and as we move forward, we hope to strengthen those bonds of affection that allow us to sing with such pride. Sincerely, Ofole Mgbako |
